I would like any advice on doing a full restoration on a 1973 Volkswagen type 3 squareback?

I have my mothers 73' squareback that she drove off the showroom floor new from Lennock Motor in Camperdown, Sydney.

I just want some advice on what are the likely costs, pitfalls and potential value of the vehicle once it is completed.

Its a pride of the family piece so we want to do right by the car in having it restored.

Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks!!!I would like any advice on doing a full restoration on a 1973 Volkswagen type 3 squareback?
You can sink crazy money into a VW, if you want to. If you are competent and can do most of the work yourself, buy high quality parts, farm out the paint and body work, then you can have a really nice car for about 10K US that will be worth 8k. That's the long and short of it. There are millions of them out there (VW's, not type3s) and the perception is that there is another one better and cheaper somewhere else. All the auction results you see for 25-50k don't really reflect the market as a whole. Restore it because you love it, it has sentimental value, or you need the car. Don't do it for the cash unless you're a pro. You'll be upside-down fast. Good luck on it!I would like any advice on doing a full restoration on a 1973 Volkswagen type 3 squareback?
My uncle has a 1967 that he has kept going for 40 years. He has rebuilt everything but the trans at least once. I guess it has over 350,000 miles now. The body is getting badly rusted, but he is in Missouri, you are not. The 73's had fuel injection which is usually a problem area. Most people remove it and revert to the carb system found on the earlier cars. It is more reliable. The area where the bumpers attach to the frame rust out and may need repairs, same for the floors eventually. My uncle took off the rear fenders and coated the inside with rust preventive (the fender and the inside of the body). Interior kits are easy to get. This should be a fun car, but not worth investing a fortune into if you can help it.
One pitfall I see all the time on type 3 is the front suspension. Some parts that are prone to wear are no longer available. Stock exhaust,no longer available.Cooling fan,not available. And these parts are prone to fail.
