You'll be a fine owner as long as you take proper care of your dog and give it the love and attention it needs. It all depends on the dog and his tastes for what the best dog food will be, so you'll probably have to figure that one out by him. For toys, Kongs are really good-kinda expensive, but they last practically forever. I'm not sure what kind of dog you're getting, but rope toys, tennis balls, frisbees, and stuffed toys are good (just don't let the dog eat the stuffing). My dog LOVES those loofa toys at petsmart. I'd try clicker training the dog because it's fairly easy and works well. Just cut up a really good treat your dog will like such as a hot dog or piece of chicken into tiny pieces. Buy a clicker (you can get them for like $1.50). When the dog does whatever is desired like sitting or coming, click the clicker and give him a treat. You always have to give him a treat, even if you click it on accident. Make sure and click during the movement, not after. Keep that up and you'll have a well-trained dog. Just give your dog the love and attention he deserves and you'll be a great owner.

P.S.-Consider adopting from a shelter. Those dogs are great and have a bunch to offer and a lot of love to give.I'm getting a Dog on my birthday any Dog advice like better food, litter,or toys, etc?
As for snacks, watch out for those made in China. There have been a lot of dogs getting kidney problems from the chemicals in those snacks. There have been some articles about it - here's one: http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2007/04/05/gluten-china.html

So, just be careful about that.

As for toys, my dog likes squeeky balls. Sometimes dogs have bad breath. My dog likes the ';kong'; toy that is made for teeth. It cleans the dogs teeth like a toothbrush when she bites it. There is ';kong breath paste'; that you put in the grooves - the dog loves it, like it is a snack, and it freshens her breath.

Did you ask for a dog for your birthday? Do you really want to have a dog; they are a lot of responsibility and work? If you really don't want a dog, you would not do right by it, and you should pass on the offer.

That being said, IF you really do want a dog I can suggest two excellent books to help you be the best owner possible! Get The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete and The Koehler Method of Dog Training by William R. Koehler. The are two of the best books ever written on dogs and training.

Actually, it would be an excellent idea to get both books and READ them both; BEFORE you even pick out a pup. Both will give you an excellent idea of what you are getting into and the responsibility that will be yours.

One other piece of advice, DO NOT buy a puppy from a pet store or news paper ad. Go on line to www.AKC.org

There you can read about all different breeds and they have a breeder referral page where you can contact reputable breeders to find out about their puppies. A reputable breeder will tell you everything you need to know about food, toys and much, much more. They will become your ';mentor'; in this new adventure.

Good luck and Happy Birthday!
