Can anyone offer advice on starting a small cafe?

I'm looking all over the web for links but not much luck, if anyone can point me to any resources or provide any advice i would be very grateful.

Thank you.Can anyone offer advice on starting a small cafe?
Hi!

If you're in the UK have you tried your local Chamber of Business? They should be able to point you in the right direction.

I don't know if this will help you, but there are four cafes in my area that are all within 1000sq metres from each other. Three of them are the kind of cafe that you see workmen in, plastic chairs and tables , hand written menus (complete with spelling mistakes!) and not at all professional looking.

The fourth one has proper wooden and metal chairs and tables. Menus have been professionally printed. This one is very clean and neat inside. They offer panninis and freshly made sandwiches, where the others only offer the usual sausage, bacon, egg butties etc.

The fourth one is the only one to have stood the test of time, it has the same owner since the day it opened, whereas the other three have ALL had several owners over the past two years.

The moral of the story here is that you need to know your market and ensure that you cater to it.

Best of luck! Can anyone offer advice on starting a small cafe?
ive often thought about running my own business, there is one thing i think vital and that would be location of this cafe, beach, town etc all good, not next to a mcdonalds. Really think about location would be my only advise if you go for it, and buy chairs and tables at auctions rather than new.
Don't eat the profits !
Before you rent make sure that there is planing permission for a cafe /take a way.If there isn't walk a way,to operate a food outlet you will need a basic food hygiene cert .If you are fitting it out from scratch talk to your locale envirmental health and ask them what standards they want.Regester self employed, get public liability and employer liability insurance and be prepared to work24/7 for the first 2 years. And finally best of luck
what do you mean by resources. if you mean furniture go to IKEA they have a full cafe kitchen layout quite cheap. If you want to know about tax phone the tax office. If you want to know about law contact the small business bureau.
